HYBRID IDENTITIES Subtitle>A cultural framework of contemporary architectural production in Croatia Introduction The “transition” process in Croatia (I am putting this notion in quotation marks here in order to be able free it from this attribute throughout the discourse), as in other post-socialist countries in Central and Eastern Europe, exists at an experiential level as a real framework for architectural production. Every intervention of architecture into a social context has a tendency to create a new spatial framework for social happenings in which individuals participate. For this reason the text will endeavour to establish a theory that relies on one initial assumption. A theory that the actual transition from a society based on the idea of social ownership towards a society of private ownership of tangible assets (from “self-managing socialism” towards “neo-liberal capitalism”) is taking place in Croatia as a process at the level of physical space, social rituals and individual identities.
